Pope Francis has designated the fourth Sunday of July to be the World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly. This is not only this year, which is the Year of the Family, but will be a memorial of the Church from now on.
We welcome all grandparents, great-grandparents, and those seniors who do not have grandchildren at our Masses this weekend. You will be a special part of our prayer today. Our hope and prayer is that God will bless you with good health and happiness, and if you are experiencing health problems, that He will make sure that you have the support and assistance that you need.
Thank you for all that you have done for your families, and for all that you do now. I know how important my own grandparents were when I was growing up. Unfortunately, because we are a more mobile society, increasingly, children are not growing up near their grandparents, and it is more difficult to develop that wonderful relationship that is such a blessing to the children and to the grandparents themselves. May God help you to maintain that intimate connection whatever the difficulties.
