The Gospel of Matthew is the first of the Gospels and is the first book of the New Testament. For centuries it was thought that this gospel was the first to be written and was always given pride of place. Scholars no longer believe that it was the first written but recognize its important place in the canon of Scripture. It is much darker than the other Gospels, with the shadow of the Cross falling across it, and it is told through the eyes of Saint Joseph.
