In last week’s bulletin, I wrote about the Great Pardon of Assisi, a plenary indulgence, granted by Jesus himself to Saint Francis of Assisi. It is offered on next Sunday, August 2. A plenary indulgence is a total pardon of all temporal punishment due to sin.

Those who wish to gain the plenary indulgence on that day must be 1) in a state of grace, 2) be free of intentional attachment to any sin, venial or mortal, 3) go to any Catholic Church, and 4) pray the Creed (Apostles Creed or Nicene Creed), an Our Father and a Hail Mary, for the intentions of the Pope, and 5) go to confession and communion within one week before or after August 2. (If one is not in a state of grace, it is necessary to go to confession before that date and before receiving communion.)

If because of the pandemic or other serious health issues, you cannot go to confession and communion, you can fulfill the requirements spiritually, with a firm resolution to go to confession and communion as soon as it is possible to do so.
