Meet the bennings

By Mary Ann Kelly, pastoral assistant
Greg and Sue Bennings demonstrate the proper way to drink tea—with pinkies extended, of course.
Greg and Sue Bennings are long-time parishioners of Mother of God. They have deep roots in the parish, as Greg’s great-grandparents were early members. For many years, Greg and Sue were regulars at the 11:30 am Mass on Sunday, sitting in back of church close to the sound board.

But now, Greg is a resident of Rosedale Green, and Sue joins him there every day. Though they can no longer attend Sunday Mass in person, they view the 11:30 am liturgy via Streamspot from Greg’s room.

The Bennings call his room "little church." There, on proud display, is a large photograph of Mother of God.

Says Sue, “When folks come in during mass, I love showing them the picture and giving parts of the history. We pray, at times, with and for these folks.”

Recently, Greg and Sue were preparing for an afternoon tea party at Rosedale Green. Tea parties have always been a Bennings favorite—they had many with their own grandchildren. During these tea parties, the grandchildren would wear fancy hats and were enchanted by the sugar cubes. Greg played the role of butler and server.

Sue recalls, "They used to say, “Gregory, more tea please.”

This was the inspiration behind a T-shirt that Sue had made for him, which he still wears occasionally…to tea parties.

Greg and Sue have found a wonderful, supportive community at Rosedale Green. Praying together and sharing the history of their parish is just one of the ways they bring their Catholicism and the spirit of Mother of God Church out into the community.

They would love to hear from you sometime! You can drop a note to them at Rosedale Green, 4250 Glenn Ave., Covington, Ky., 41015.
Sue had this T-shirt custom made for Greg to wear at tea parties with their grandchildren.
Greg is proof that there's definitely "something about a sharp-dressed man."
