old chalice gets new use

Vessels used for celebration of the Mass. A vintage chalice (not pictured) has been discovered and restored for use at Mother of God.
Recently when Vic Canfield, our facilities manager, was searching for some records that seemed to have been misplaced, he went through an old safe that is in the rectory. Although the records were not there (they were found elsewhere), he did find an old box. It contained a chalice that was heavily tarnished. There was a note from Fr. Hartman suggesting that it could possibly be cleaned up and used at some point. It was taken to someone who is informed about restorations, who was able to get the tarnish off.

The chalice is truly beautiful, with a great deal of engraving, and with amethyst jewels. There are no markings telling us who had given it to Mother of God, or why it was donated to us. It is truly a beautiful chalice and is in incredible shape. Although it was covered in tarnish, there are no signs of wear and tear on it. It seems to have been rarely used.

This is a great find, and I want to thank Vic for his discovery.

I used the chalice at Masses last Sunday and will continue to do so through Lent. After that, it will be used on a rotating basis with other chalices that we have.
