pray for unity of the church

The Western and the Eastern Churches use a different method to determine on what Sunday Easter will be celebrated. This year, in a very rare occurrence, the two methods lead to the same Sunday, April 20, as the date for Easter. We hope that this unique circumstance will contribute to a healing of the divisions between Catholicism and the Orthodox Churches, and an eventual reunion.

Pope John Paul II, who worked very hard to bring about a reunion of the Eastern and Western branches of the Church, said that it was important that the Church breathe with both lungs, to function fully in the world today, meaning of course, that these two great aspects of the Church need one another.

Let us pray for that reunion, helping to fulfill Jesus' prayer at the Last Supper, “May they be one, Father, as you and I are one.”
