St. Agnes, Virgin and Martyr

St. Agnes was born in 291 AD into a noble Roman family, where she was raised as a Christian. She was widely known for her beauty and was courted by many young men from the distinguished ranks of Roman society.

As a devout Christian, she was deeply devoted to her faith and resolved to maintain her religious purity. Her spurned suitors exacted revenge by reporting her to authorities, which resulted in her being persecuted for her beliefs. She was tortured, tried and sentenced to be burned to death at the stake. But when the wood did not burn, she was beheaded. The year was 304 AD, and she was just 12 or 13 years old. Her sister was martyred with her. We keep in mind our neighboring parish of St. Agnes.

The feast of St. Agnes is Wednesday, Jan. 21.
