this week's feasts and remembrances

Columbus Day/Indigenous Peoples Day

This Monday, Oct. 12, is both Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples Day. Columbus is honored as the first European to come to America in 1492. For centuries, we have celebrated that he and his company of explorers, seeking India, arrived on the coast of America. Not knowing where they were, they erroneously named the natives that they encountered “Indians.”

St. Teresa of Jesus, Virgin and Doctor of the Church

St. Teresa of Jesus, also known as St. Teresa of Avila, lived in the 1500s. She was a Carmelite sister and a very important writer and teacher of spirituality. Her writings, including such works as The Interior Castle, and the Way of Perfection, are so highly regarded that she has been declared a Doctor of the Church.

Her feast day is Thursday, Oct. 15.
