happy feast day, mother of god
This Tuesday is the Feast of the Annunciation of the Lord. It is significant for the entire Church because it commemorates the event in which the Archangel Gabriel appeared to the Blessed Virgin Mary in Nazareth and told her that she had been chosen to be the mother of the Son of God. She gives her great “Fiat,” by responding, “Let it be done to me according to your word.” The large mural just to the left of the altar of repose portrays that moment.
But this feast day is especially important for us at Mother of God, for it is our parish patronal feast. The full name of our church is, “The Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of God.” In addition to the mural portraying the Annunciation, almost all of the artwork in our parish commemorates the life of the Blessed Mother. The five murals in front of church portray the five Joyful Mysteries of the rosary. The great window on the left of the transept (as you face the altar) tells of Mary’s Immaculate Conception. The one on the right tells of her Assumption into Heaven, body and soul. The windows around the body of the church, beginning on the east side (left), show us scenes from the life of Mary, beginning with her birth and working up to her death, or her dormition (falling asleep) on the west side (right}.
