St. Mark, Evangelist

Saturday, April 25, is the Feast of St. Mark, the Evangelist. Like St. Luke, Mark was not one of the Twelve. He was one of the early 72 disciples whom Jesus sent out on mission. He is also thought to be the John Mark named in the Acts of the Apostles as a companion of both St. Paul and St. Peter.
Mark is the author of the Gospel of St. Mark, which was the first written. Matthew and Luke seem to have had a copy of Mark’s Gospel in front of them as they added material to it. Mark’s is the shortest of the Gospels and moves with a great deal of urgency.
