St. Aloysius Gonzaga

The Feast of St. Aloysius Gonzaga is this Saturday, June 21. Aloysius was born in 1568, in Italy. He was born into a wealthy noble family. As a teenager, he suffered with kidney disease which affected him the rest of his life. He entered into the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), and in 1591, a plague broke out in Rome. Aloysius volunteered to work at the hospital there with the plague victims. Eventually he became infected and, after a time of sickness, passed away.
St. Aloysius was the patron saint of our neighboring parish to the west. It was struck by lightning in 1985 and burnt. The diocese decided not to rebuild, and St. Aloysius was absorbed into Mother of God Church. Funds from that parish were used to build St. Aloysius Center, which now serves as the parish office.
As we honor St. Aloysius, let us recall all who were part of that parish, and pray for those who have died.
