This Monday is Labor Day, one of the official holidays celebrated by our country. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, the Labor Movement was growing in numbers and in its impact on our country. Labor unions were fighting for just and safe working conditions, and for better wages. The landscape of our nation’s factories and other workplaces were changing dramatically. Many felt there was a need to have a special day to celebrate this progress.
   
Some other countries celebrate Labor Day on the first Monday of September as well, but in Europe most celebrate it on May 1, or May Day.
   
As we enjoy this day off, take a moment to remember the blessings that unions have brought to so many.
