behold the lamb of god

Although we will be reading from the Gospel of Matthew throughout 2016, this Second Sunday of Ordinary Time always includes a reading from the Gospel of John. Why? I have no idea. I was not consulted on the matter.

Last week our Gospel told the story of the baptism of Jesus. The Gospel for today portrays a scene that took place the very next day, as John the Baptist was standing next to the River Jordan, and he saw Jesus walking toward him. He said to the disciples who were with him, “Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.”

John says that when he baptized Jesus, he saw the Holy Spirit descend upon Him as a dove. He had been told that when he saw the Spirit descend upon someone, that would be the man who had been sent to proclaim. He announced Him as the Son of God.
