Schmitt painting gifted to parish

Please note the large painting in the sanctuary this Sunday. It was painted by Johann Schmitt and was originally in Mother of God School. It is titled, Our Lady of Sorrows or the Immaculate Heart of Mary. When the school was torn down, it was given to Vic Canfield for safekeeping. Last year, he had the painting restored and has now donated it back to Mother of God Church, in memory of Rick Sacksteder. It will be kept in the pipe organ gallery, opposite of another Johann Schmitt painting, the Visitation of Mary to Elizabeth.
Johann Schmitt is best known as the teacher of Frank Duveneck, probably the most esteemed artist of the Greater Cincinnati area.
There will be special Vespers at 5 pm this Sunday, May 18, when the painting will be dedicated. All are invited to attend and take part.
