first deaf eucharistic congress brings hope and inspiration

Mark and Kathleen Rosing felt inspired at the Deaf Eucharistic Congress earlier this month.
Mother of God parishioners Mark and Kathleen Rosing recently attended the first Deaf Eucharistic Congress at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Shrine in Emmitsburg, MD. Mark is Deaf with a cochlear implant and relies on ASL interpreters when he attends Mass.
Unfortunately, very few churches offer services that make the Mass and the sacraments accessible to the Deaf community. The resulting pain and alienation were evident among the 200-plus hearing and Deaf Catholics who traveled from 25 states and two countries to attend the congress.
Mother of God provides ASL interpretation at the 11:30 am Mass each Sunday and at other events as needed. The parish also employes the Listen system that works with the user's hearing aids and an app on their cellphone to enhance the audio experience.
