liturgy of the word is next mass topic

On Sunday, Sept. 6, I will offer the third sermon on the Mass. The first was a reflection on how the Mass evolved, and also the idea of Jesus’ four ways of being present in each Mass—the assembly, the priest, the Word, and the sacrament. The second week we looked at the entrance or gathering rites.

This week, we move into the Liturgy of the Word. Jesus is the Word made flesh who dwelt among us. We encounter Christ in the Word whenever we read it prayerfully, but especially when it is proclaimed in the liturgy.

What I am trying to demonstrate is that we do encounter the living Lord Jesus Christ under these four forms at every Mass. Meeting Him, encountering Him, in the Word is one of the most profound ways in which we encounter Him.
