The Transfiguration

On Tuesday, Aug. 6, the Church celebrates the feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord. This remarkable event occurred when the disciples were in great crisis. Jesus had begun speaking of His Passion, telling them that when He came to Jerusalem He would be arrested, beaten, and killed, and on the third day would rise again. This contradicted everything they believed about the Messiah, and their faith in Him was shaken.
The Transfiguration was intended to strengthen their faith by showing them by the presence of Moses (the Lawgiver) and Elijah (the Prophet) and the voice of the Heavenly Father, that what we call the Old Testament (the Jews called it the Law and the Prophets) and God Himself testified to Jesus, and that they should trust in His words.

St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross

St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross was born Edith Stein in Germany to a Jewish family. She was recognized to be brilliant from an early age. She would become a philosopher and became Catholic after reading the works of St. Teresa of Avila, taking her name for her own religious name.
Even though she had converted to Catholicism, the Nazis saw her as a Jew, as for them, that was a racial matter. She fled to a Carmelite convent in Poland, but when Germany invaded Poland, she was arrested and sent to Birkenau, where she was executed.
The Church recognizes her as a martyr saint.
Her feast day is Friday, Aug. 9, the anniversary of her death.
