vote yes on 2
Last Sunday I read to you the letter from Bishop Iffert concerning Issue 2, that will be on the ballot in November. We have put the letter onto the parish website, and the Messenger is giving very good background on the matter. Please take time to be well informed. Sadly, those who oppose the amendment are making absolutely false statements to bolster their case.
This amendment does not take any money from public schools in order to support Catholic schools. In fact, it does not address any particular financial matters at all. All that it does is allow the governor and the legislature to discuss if there are any ways to give support to the Catholic schools and other private schools. Those who claim otherwise are lying. How sad.
As I mentioned, there are approximately 10,000 students in the diocesan schools. The cost of educating each child in the public school system is $15,000. This means that the Diocese of Covington is saving the state of Kentucky $150 million per year. If you add the schools in the Archdiocese of Louisville, the Diocese of Lexington, and the Diocese of Owensboro, that number is over half a billion dollars that the state of Kentucky does not pay to educate our children.
