Pray for our leaders

When I was a kid, we used to get two days off in February as national holidays. These were the birthdays of President Lincoln on Feb. 12 and President Washington on Feb. 22. At some point, these were combined into Presidents’ Day, honoring all of those who have served our country in the role of president.
Presidential politics in our own age has become intensely divisive, as more and more people find it impossible to make a distinction between the office and the person who holds the office. As difficult as it may be, it is important for us to respect the office, even if we do not especially respect the person who is the president.
St. Paul told St. Timothy that Christians should pray for the kings and for all in high positions, so that they can live in peace. These rulers were persecuting the Christians and were certainly not friends of the Christian community. We need to pray for our presidents and other officials, no matter their political party or their positions on the issues.
