All Scripture Is Inspired by God

Oct. 19, 2025

St. Timothy was a young man who converted to Christianity under the guidance of St. Paul. He became a student of St. Paul who ordained him to the priesthood and to the order of bishop. When St. Paul left Ephesus, he left Timothy in charge. He wrote letters back to Timothy to give him advice about various matters.

In his second letter, which we read from today, he addresses the importance of Scripture. He reminds Timothy that he grew up in a Jewish household where he was immersed in Scripture. Then he says that the Scriptures are "capable of giving wisdom for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for refutation, for correction, and for training in righteousness, so that one who belongs to God may be competent, equipped for every good work."

If you were wondering why you should read the Bible, this is the best reason you will ever find. The Scriptures are the Word of God. As we read them, we become aware that God is speaking directly to us. This is particularly true when we read the Gospels, which tell us of the words and actions of Jesus Himself.

St. Jerome, whose feast we celebrated a few weeks ago, wrote that ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ. The catechism teaches us that we are to know, love and serve God. This begins with knowing God. Ho can we know God? It begins with reading Scripture and meditating and reflecting on what God has to tell us about Himself.
