To Whom Will You Commit?
Nov. 24, 2024
Today is the Feast of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, celebrating the final victory of Christ over sin and death, when His Kingdom will reign for all time. It is also the final Sunday of the Church year. Next Sunday is the First Sunday of Advent, which begins the new Church year, and the season of Advent.
C.S. Lewis describes the Incarnation, when Christ entered into this world, as a sneak attack by God to recapture our captured planet, and to restore the Kingdom of God. The Kingdom of God exists wherever and whenever God is King. Heaven, which has always operated under the authority of God, is the Kingdom of Heaven. Our planet Earth was the Kingdom of God, until sin entered into our world through the rebellion of our first parents, Adam and Eve. This was the great Fall in which we welcomed, not God, but the Evil One, to rule our world. And we human beings became slaves to Satan.
Immediately after the Fall, God entered into the Garden and condemned the Serpent, saying, “I will put enmity between you and the Woman, and between her offspring and yours. You will strike at his heel, and he will strike at your head.” The early Church Fathers believed that this was a great prophecy, in which God announced that this Fall would not stand. He would send His Son, born of Woman, into the world to do battle with the Evil One, and to defeat him. This victory was won in the death and resurrection of Christ. Although facing the ultimate defeat at that time, Satan still had power to roam the earth and lead the sons and daughters of God into sin.
This feast of Christ the King celebrates the ultimate victory of Christ, when all sin and death will come to an end. For those of us who have accepted Christ as our King, and who have become Kingdom people, this final victory is very good news indeed. For those who are still in love with the Kingdom of this world, that victory may appear to be very bad news. If we are not yet committed to the Kingdom of God, let us make that commitment now.
