Happy Independence Day
June 30, 2024
On Thursday we will celebrate the Fourth of July, Independence Day. It has always intrigued me that we celebrate our nation’s independence, not on the day that we won the Revolutionary War, defeating the armies of King George. No, we say that we became an independent nation on the day that we declared we were free. King George did not give us our freedom. We took it because it was our right. The Declaration of Independence that was proclaimed that day tells us that we human beings are endowed by our Creator with certain inalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.
It is the GOD GIVEN RIGHT of every human being to be free from persecution, oppression, to believe what they want to believe, to say what they want to say (as long as what they want to say does not infringe on the rights of others), and ultimately, they possess the right to life.
We have made a remarkable commitment to the rights and dignity of every human being. All too often we have gotten this wrong, and certain groups and individuals have had to fight for those rights and that dignity. In fact, we have never gotten this completely right. But, as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice.” As fallen human beings, living in a fallen world, we will never get this completely right, but we must continually seek a more perfect world.
As we celebrate the birth of our country, may we work to see that the rights guaranteed to us by God are enjoyed by everyone.
